A NEW METHOD FOR DITCHING UNDERWATER PIPELINES
A new method for ditching underwater pipelines, developed by Shell Research N.V. near Rotterdam, involves laying the pipeline on the sea bottom, dragging a train of skids onto the pipeline, and water-jetting the pipeline under the sea bottom by means of nozzles on the skid. A surface vessel then pulls the skid train off the buried pipeline. Accessory mechanical or hydraulic equipment can be mounted on the first skid for working on a hard sea bottom. If further tests are successful, the method will be used to ditch an existing 56 km long natural gas pipeline between the Leman Bank in the North Sea and Bacton in England.
