WORLDWIDE GAS/URETHANE FOAM TO INSULATE OFF-SHORE LNG LINE
An offshore ship-loading system being constructed as part of an LNG installation in Brunei consists of two parallel 18 in. OD stainless steel pipelines, each 2.6 mi long, preinsulated with approximately 6 in. of polyurethane foam, reinforced with two layers of glass-fiber matting within the foam and protected by a glass-reinforced epoxy vapor barrier. The foam is Isonate CPR 385-2.5, a fire-retardant, fluorocarbon-blown rigid urethane spray system formulated by Upjohn Co., CPR Division. The urethane insulation, as applied, should pose few maintenance problems. For those repairs that may be needed, operators can be trained on-site to apply the foam. Of the various possible alternatives, vacujm jacketing was rejected because it involves too highly sophisticated technology for both maintenance and installation. Cellular-glass insulation was ruled out for the same reason. In the future, there may be other LNG installations involving underwater pipelines; it may be possible, by use of urethane foam, to insulate pipes of up to 50 in. OD.
