TUBEXPRESS DEVELOPED--A NEW CONCEPT IN SOLIDS TRANSPORTATION
Trans-Southern Pipeline Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corp., has developed a system, named "Tubexpress", for moving packaged or bulk material through a conduit in wheeled capsules propelled by air. The concept, first formulated by R. Carstens (Georgia Tech.), has been demonstrated in a prototype 36 in. line 1400 ft long, powered by a 12 hp electrically driven air pump. While there is no limit to the length of line operable, it is anticipated that applications are more likely in systems up to 10 miles in length in metropolitan areas. A 36 in. system costing about $1 million/mi would be capable of moving about 200 tons/hr of cargo.
