THE HOVERCRAFT COMES TO THE AID OF PIPELINE CONSTRUCTORS
The hovercraft comes to the aid of pipeline constructors for transporting pipe and heavy equipment over marshes and soft ground. A hovertrailer with a seven ton payload capacity was recently introduced which can increase considerably the load capacity of a tracked or wheeled tow vehicle. Under conditions where it is impossible for a tow vehicle to operate, such as over tidal marsh, the trailer can be winched across. A width of eight feet enables the trailer to be moved on trucks and to pass through normal farm gates. The trailer consists of a steel platform around which is fitted a flexible segmented skirt; lift power is produced by centrifugal fans driven by two 95 hp engines. Side-loading ramps give access to a deck which is only 10 in. above ground level.
