SONIC FLOWMETER IS UNDER TEST
To date, test results on the NUsonic Inc. flowmeter, obtained at prover sites in Conway, Kans., and Hobbs N.M. indicate that a repeatability of better than 0.1% of full scale (4500 bbl/hr for 6 in. meter) is achievable in LPG and gasoline. The device consists of a transducer assembly, a transmitter, and a receiver. The transducer assembly contains two transducers which alternately transit high-frequency pulses of sonic energy upstream and downstream diagonally across the pipe. The transmission time is monitored in both directions; the difference in transmission times is proportional to the flow velocity. The flowmeter has no moving parts; it offers low maintenance costs, minimum pressure drop, bidirectional operation, good repeatability, and linear response; it is suitable for use in many liquids, including crude oil and cryogenic liquids and is adaptable to 4-48 in. dia lines. Evaluation of the flowmeter will be completed by July 1972, and production units will be available by early Sept. 1972.
