OFFSHORE PIPELINE LAYING NEEDS HONING
A summary of some of the papers presented at the 2nd Offshore Technology Conference (Houston April 1970) covers those of C.B. Corley, Jr. (Standard Oil Co. (N.J.)) and D.G. Warner (Esso Prod. Res. Co.), analyzing the critical need for the development of new offshore pipeline construction technology, e.g., new welding methods, the use of high-angle ramps to extend lay-barge operation to water depths of 1000 ft or more, and the use of semisubmersible barges capable of laying pipe in 12-15 ft seas with minimum downtime; of S.W. Small (Bechtel Inc.), reviewing structural design considerations both during and after construction; of J.R. Wilkins (J. Ray McDermott Inc.), proposing to analyze stresses induced in a submarine pipeline during laying by the use of finite difference equations and load deflection curves: of J.J. Jones and G.W. Payne (Brown & Root Inc.) and of R. Johnston (Computer Usage Corp.), suggesting the use of a microwave survey system developed by their companies for precise navigation along a predetermined course and better barge positioning: of E.D. Van Reenan (Van Reenan Assn.), describing submarine pipeline survey devices: and of B.C. Gilman (Oecan Systems Inc.), reviewing past and prospective developments in underwater hyperbaric welding.
