INFLUENCE OF ROAD SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS ON VEHICLE NOISE

INFLUENCE DES CARACTERISTIQUES DE SURFACE SUR LE BRUIT DES VEHICULES

Taking action at the level of surface characteristics is proposed as a new way of abating traffic noise, the potential effectiveness of which is comparable to that of noise screens. It is demonstrated that this action is in principle compatible with the upholding of good skid resistance properties. As the sand patch test appears to be irrelevant, a new method of analyzing and characterizing the macrotexture has been developed. This has made it possible to determine which surface texture parameters contribute to pavement noise and to identify the physical mechanisms responsible for the noise arising from interaction of tyre and road.
