KHARG ISLAND TO GANAWEH, IRAN--42-INCH SUBSEA LINE LAID WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY
Brown and Root laid the fifth submarine pipeline to Kharg Island using a new microwave survey system for accurate positioning of the lay barge and for straightness of the line. Excavation of a trench through coral by means of shaped charge explosives was carried out by Jet Research Center, Inc., of Arlington, Texas. Pipe for the project was fabricated, cleaned, primed, coated, wrapped, and concrete coated in Japan, shipped to Kharg Island on ocean-going vessels, and unloaded on barges and hauled directly to the lay barge L. E. MINOR. Details of the operations are described.
