FULL AUTOMATION OF PIPELINE-DESIGN PROCESS APPEARS POSSIBLE
A remote-access, time-shared computer system for gas pipeline design, developed by International Management & Engineering Group Ltd. (IMEG), has resulted in a 70% reduction in design-optimization time with an accompanying 30% reduction in design cost, and accurate forecasting of pipeline operating characteristics both in long-term steady-state and shorter-term dynamic behavior; it has also provided a sound basis for further extension of the computer aids. The IMEG system is based upon an analysis of the pipeline-design process, to reveal the basic computations required by the various design technologies and the information flow between them. Where appropriate, a separate computer program has been produced to cover each particular task. The suite of programs is divided into four main groups: the optimization loop, the detailing system. the economics group, and the simulation system. This suite of computer programs provides faster production of basic designs, improved quality and depth of data on the operational characteristics of the pipeline, and reduction in design costs. The four main program groups are described in detail, and some future extensions are discussed.
