ENVIRONMENTAL PIPELINING: THE WAY OF DOING BUSINESS FROM NOW ON

A suggested checklist of environmental factors to be considered by pipeline companies includes (1) the impact of route selection (erosion problems, revegetation), (2) access roads (justification, effects, removal when no longer needed), (3) maintenance of aesthetic values, (4) impact on aquatic environments, (5) protection of terrestrial wildlife, especially from effects during construction, (6) concern for historic and archeological values, (7) contingency planning for oil spills, (8) concern for environmental damage due to brute-force engineering and heavy equipment in susceptible areas, and (9) restoration of the right-of-way with attention to its potential uses. An environmental coordinator on the pipeline construction team can facilitate day-to-day attention to environmental problems, provide training and expert advice for employees and develop communication with conservation groups.
