TECHNIQUE FOR EVALUATION OF EARTHWORK CONSTRUCTION

When the dynaflect response is poor, it is necessary to evaluate the cause and thereafter to study remedies in order to achieve good response. A field procedure has been devised by the RRC to locate the defective area when such poor dynaflect response if found. The deflections occurring within finite layers of earthwork due to the applied dynamic load of dynaflect at the surface were measured by special probes. The resistance of different layers are then found by a static penetrometer. From the measured deflection and resistance values, and by the aid of a computer program for the stress distribution at different depths, the relative stiffness of various layers could be estimated. The layer(s) contributing disproportionately to the total deflection is thus identified. In such cases, investigations of such layers revealed improper construction faults which generally were not revealed by standard quality control tests. (Author/TRRL)
