DEEPWATER TECHNOLOGY MAKES RAPID PROGRESS

Several companies have, or soon will have, equipment for dry environment construction and repair of pipelines in 650 ft of water. At least one firm is working on equipment that will permit operations in 1200 ft of water in 1970, with plans for even deeper work by the end of 1971. A survey of the current status of deep water technology covers U.S. companies, including considerable detail for Taylor Diving & Salvage Co. (diving equipment, life support systems, pipe alignment rig, hyperbaric welding) and Ocean Systems, Inc., a Union Carbide Corp. affiliate (subsea bubbles, welding method, deep water equipment, pipeline applications, underwater repairs).
