BIG CANADA GROWTH FOR SOLIDS PIPELINES SEEN

Acquisition of 50% ownership of Commercial Solids Pipe Line Co. (Comsol) by Canadian Pacific Ltd. is opposed by eight oil companies, all leading sulfur producers at provincial natural gas processing plants, and the governments of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Shell Oil Canada Ltd., the owner of Comsol, offered other producers the opportunity to acquire part interest in Comsol two years ago, but was turned down. Comsol, a nonoperative company but which holds a federal charter, has assests of about $1 million, including its studies and engineering contracts covering a possible solids pipeline route from Alberta to West Coast ports. CP is said to have paid $500,000 for an option to buy into the company. Experts believe a solids pipeline could be built in Canada by 1975. The chief of research for CP stated that a national solids pipeline network will be as important as present day rail networks within the next 30 years.
