A MAJOR PIPELINE REPAIR PROGRAM CARRIED OUT BY USING LIQUID NITROGEN AS INERT GAS

After a 500 km pipeline of Salzgitter Ferngas GmbH was converted to natural gas, the water traps were removed, some of the valves were replaced with new ones, and sections of the pipeline were welded under nitrogen gas. Liquid nitrogen was stored in a tank, led into ribbed pipe evaporators, warmed to ambient temperature, expanded, and passed into the pipeline. The apparatus, which was leased from Linde A.G. was simple, and no difficulties, accidents, or burns were caused during repair of 100 failure points in pipelines. Time and cost savings were realized.
