THE LILLE METRO--INITIAL APPLICATION OF THE VAL SYSTEM
Since April 1982, an initial section of line No. 1 of the Lille metro has been open to the public. Most of the line will be placed in service in 1983. The VAL system, of which the Lille metro constitutes the initial application, is one of the first entirely automatic urban transport systems, with no staff permanently on the trains. It is worth recalling the objectives of this programme and resources employed to achieve them, and indicating the initial observations on operation, and in particular the first reactions of the public.
