STRESS-CORROSION CRACKING IS MAJOR RESEARCH TARGET
At the 4th Symposium on Line Pipe Research (Dallas Nov. 1969), sponsored by the American Gas Association Pipeline Research Committee (NG-18), G.M. McClure (Battelle Mem. Inst.) reviewed each of the seven phases of the current NG-18 research program on pipeline failure mechanisms. Other members of the Battelle Memorial Institute staff who presented reports at the same meeting included R.R. Fessler on stress-corrosion cracking: A.R. Duffy on hydrostatic testing; J.F. Kiefner on progress in the area of fracture initiation; R.J. Eiber on fracture propagation; R.B. Smith on the NG-18 field-failure survey program; R.J. Eiber on field investigations; T.P. Groeneveld on hydrogen-stress cracking; G.T. Hahn and A.R. Rosenfield on fundamental fracture mechanics; W.A. Maxey on pipe yield strength measurements; and T.J. Atterbury and R.J. Eiber on pipe manufacturing variables. The meeting was also attended by members of state public service commissions and representatives of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Power Commission, and National Transportation Safety Board, of Canadian and Mexican steel companies, and of the British Gas Council.
