THE ARRB ROAD USERS DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM (RUDAS)

This manual documents the Australian Road Research Board's Road Users Data Acquisition System (RUDAS), a vehicle-mounted logging system constructed using ARRB AMBDAS microprocessor modules. The system allows the accurate recording of time, distance travelled, and, in the version illustrated, lateral position of the vehicle and lateral acceleration of the vehicle. The flexibility of the system will allow many applications other than the one illustrated. The data are recorded onto a computer-compatible cassette tape and comments from the keyboard may be inserted into the data stream during data acquisition to facilitate later analysis. The system is a distance-based logging system and the operator can preset the logging frequency to any desired distance interval prior to the commencement of logging. The system maintains software routines for the setting up and calibrating of external transducers. During logging the recording of data can be suspended when only certain sections of road are to be recorded. During a suspension the time and distance registers are maintained and incremented by the system so that continuity is not lost when recording recommences. Data being recorded on the system's cassette module may be viewed for short periods on the printer without interrupting the recording of data. The manual describes the method of data logging and record formats, gives detailes of operating commands, and outlines the functions of hardware and software modules which constitute the system.
