PIPELINE INNOVATIONS ARE VARIED

Two positioning devices have been developed which eliminate the use of buoys for markers in the positioning of lay barges. A microwave system, developed by Brown & Root Inc., uses a shipboard computer to acquire and digitally process data from two known shore or platform locations in relation to the lay barge. Coordinate positions are then plotted and compared with a theoretical route. An Autotape system, used by Shell Pipe Line Co., includes an electronic interrogator and plotter installed on the lay barge and two slave responders. The bias-flanged coupling developed by HydroTech Services Inc. for connecting misaligned sections of underwater pipe, inflatable pontoons developed by Avon Rubber Co. Ltd. to procide buoyancy for pipelines during pulling operations, a method developed by K.A. Kline (Harper Wood Inc.) for the vertical installation of pipelines with very little or no pipe deformation, and ultrasonic pingers installed in underwater valves and pigs for easier tracing are also described.
