HERE ARE TWO RECENT METHODS OF REPAIRING UNDERWATER PIPELINES
Hydrotech Services Inc. has developed two new methods for underwater pipeline repairing: (1) dry-atmosphere welding, carried out by divers inside a gas-filled "habitat" providing high-quality welding, good control, and visibility; and (2) a permanent coupling and seal-device similar to the recently developed HydroCouple, which can be compared with an "overshot" or an oilwell packer turned "inside out". Comparison with other methods of repair in use, such as externally applied clamps, replacement of seals, raising the entire damaged zone to the surface, and complete replacement of the entire line, as well as field testing, indicated the advantages of the new methods in cost savings and in eliminating some operational stages (lifting, replacement, etc.).
