ARTICULATED STINGER LAYS PIPE UNDER TENSION IN DEEP WATER
The articulated stinger was designed by Shell Pipe Line Corp., built by J Ray McDermott Co., Inc., and first used in August 1968. Three separate somastic-coated lines were laid for Sheel in 300 to 340 ft of water in the South Pass area of the Gulf of Mexico in 41 days. Coupled with the use of the stringer was the termination of the line with a bending shoe, designed by Shell, which allows the pipe to be connected to the platform by means of pulling and bending the pipe through the shoe and up to the deck of the platform.
