MOBILE MUCKING OUT SYSTEMS IMPROVE OVERALL PERFORMANCE

The article examines developments in spoil removal equipment designed for improved overall performance and economy. Present trends show a greater use of electric and electro-hydraulic systems, specialised machine designs and improved safety features. Examples discussed cover plant typical of mobile designs available with the emphasis on civil engineering requirements. Factors affecting the economy of selection include particle size and abrasiveness of material excavated, face section - including pilot and multi-stage excavation methods, number of faces, life expectancy, haulage grades and ancillary excavation requirements. For large section tunnels surface-type loaders and hydraulic excavators are used provided that attention is paid to ventilation requirements. Such equipment usually requires more floor area to manoeuvre compared with specialist designs. (TRRL)
