EXCHANGE PROJECT: JAPAN AND THE UNITED STATES--NEW DIRECTIONS FOR URBAN TRANSPORTATION
This research/exchange project, Japan and the United States: New Directions for Urban Transportation, was intended to foster increased understanding and cooperation. Major emphasis was a study of each nation's social structure as it relates to urban transportation, disclosing transferable experiences. Rather than concentrating on technological problems, the study sought to learn from each other problems and solutions as related to large urban centers. A convergence between the extremes of an overly personalized urban transport system (U.S.) and an overly collectivized one (Japan) may produce a "balanced" transportation concept for urban mobility that would allow each nation to sustain the growth and economic viability of metropolitan areas. Four Americans and four Japanese were involved in the exchange visits and studies. Their individual reports are part of this overall report.
