THE TROLLEYBUS AS A POSSIBLE FORM OF URBAN TRANSPORT

This article deals with the specific features peculiar to this form of transport. It is concluded that the trolley bus should now be regarded as an equal partner in the range of forms of public transport with its own particular role. Pollution-free operations attract increasing interest in political circles. Although first costs are higher than is the case for motor buses, electric traction equipment is long life and reusable which affects comparison. Future energy problems will not be as important for trolley buses as for diesel buses. Both energy and maintenance costs will increasingly favor the trolley bus. Technological challenges focus on energy conservation and reduced maintenance costs. Installation of overhead should be planned, along with development of operating strategies, well in advance of introducing trolley bus service and the proper mix of trolley and motor buses should be established. Oil supply problems should encourage governments to foster introduction of trolley buses in place of motor buses.
