THREE-PHASE MOTORS POWER TORINO'S ARTICULATED LIGHT RAIL VEHICLES
The 100 light rail vehicles which Fiat is building for the expanding light rail network of Torino, Italy, each consist of a pair of articulated bodies mounted on three trucks. Each of the axles on the outboard trucks is powered by an ac traction motor; continuous rating of the four motors is 420 kW. The chopper and inverter circuits are designed with semiconductors used at well below their normal ratings to enhance reliability. The arrangement of input filter, chopper, smoothing circuit and inverter needed to produce variable-frequency three-phase power for the motors is capable also of full regenerative braking or dynamic braking if line voltage is too high.
