WORLD'S FIRST MAGLEV OPERATION MOVES INTO THE TEST PHASE
The 620 m elevated guideway linking Birmingham International station with a new airport terminal is almost complete, but nine months of intensive testing will precede passenger service in April 1984. Using magnetic attraction to levitate the cars reduces the number of moving and wearing parts, which should lead to high reliability and low maintenance costs. The Birmingham line is seen as a shop-window for this co-operative venture by a number of British firms, with British Rail's Research Division providing technical back-up.
