Emerging Technologies Impacting the Future of Transportation
The fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have experienced a renewed focus over the last decade. This chapter presents a brief discussion of transportation systems management and operation because this concept links AI and ML techniques. Edge computing technology is introduced from the following aspects: demand on existing transportation infrastructure, identification of transportation application scenarios that edge computing technology can support, and the impact of edge computing on CAV-based roadside infrastructure migration. Specific areas of emphasis include the innovation of 5G technologies and potential impacts on the transportation industry, such as review of 5G data services, impact of 5G data services on smart transportation Infrastructure enhancement, and the impact of 5G data services on connected and automated vehicle (CAV) migration. An overview of Internet of Things (IoTs) technologies is provided and includes transportation application scenarios in which IoTs would be beneficial.
