AUTO LAP BELTS SEEN AS CAUSE OF LOW BACK INJURIES IN CHILDREN
In lap-belted children, the sudden deceleration of a head-on collision causes their bodies to hyperflex about the belt, resulting in lower spinal injuries. However, without a belt most children would be killed in the same type of accident. Perhaps the best solution lies with the use of lap-and-shoulder harness for front and back seat riders. This type of restraint does not seem to be associated with a characteristic injury.
