SUBMARINE PIPELINES

Submarine pipelines can be characterized as those for carrying offshore crude oil and gas; medium distance lines for tanker loading and unloading and the crossing of major rivers and channels; and river crossings. The handling and moving of the pipeline from its construction location to the sea bed involves considerable stressing of the pipeline, and the design must be studied with, and related to, the method of installation. The principal factors affecting the design may be summarized as its security against the forces of nature, its ability to withstand permanent and construction stresses, and the methods of construction and burying.
