BROWN & ROOT INC. COMPLETES 48-INCH SEA LOADING LINE IN PERSIAN GULF
This is the largest submarine line completed to date for the Kuwait Oil Co. (owned by British Petroleum Co. Ltd. and Gulf Oil Corp.). It stretches from the port of Mina'al Ahmadi to an offshore structural docking and loading facility. The facility will be used to load crude oil to deep-draft tankers which have a capacity of 312,000 dwt. Huge supertankers will transport the cargo to Gulf's Bantry Bay terminal in Ireland. The lay barge "L.E. Minor", which laid the line, has five welding stations, an X-ray station, and a field joint station. To handle the pipe, the barge is equipped with five large, remotely controlled, electrically operated davits, adjustable pipe shoes, a hydraulically controlled pipe conveyor, and stalking equipment. The barge is moved by operation of eight anchor winches which are electrically operated from a central control station. The huge sea loading line will allow 320,000 dwt tankers, on order by Kwait Oil Co., to load at a rate of 100,000 bbl/hr and will shorten the turn-around time at Mina'al Ahmadi to 24 hr.
