METHODS FOR THE INEXPENSIVE ACQUISITION AND APPLICATION OF TRANSIT DATA: PROGRAM REVIEW
This report provides a brief overview of a 1975-76 UMTA demonstration program which explored the feasibility and desirability of collection passenger-oriented data for service planning and analysis. It outlines the goals of the project, describes the data collection and analysis techniques examined, and highlights a wide range of potential applications for the data. These include the development of service standards, estimation of the market for transit, evaluation of market penetration and service effectiveness, route financial analysis, and route planning and scheduling. The report includes a list of typical questions that can be answered with the data and a facsimile of a survey which was used to solicit socioeconomic and tripmaking data from a sample of San Fernando Valley transit riders.
