UNDERWATER PIPELINE WELDING REPAIRS

Underwater pipeline welding repairs on bottom and in the dry condition have been successfully carried out by Brown & Root Inc. and by Taylor Diving in the Gulf of Mexico. By use of a specially developed submersible "habitat" chamber, a 20 in. dia damaged line was repaired in 60 ft of water in record time. After the chamber has been lowered from a barge onto the location, the welder enters it through a door; the door is closed and the water expelled with a gas. During welding operations, an inert gas is used, which necessitates the use of an oxygen mask by the diver. The chamber weighs 10 tons to overcome buoyancy. It can handle lines up to 30 in. diameter.
