MODERN DESIGN: INDUSTRY SURVEY/HORSEPOWER TRENDS IN THE U.S. PIPELINE INDUSTRY
More than 1 million hp will be added to the nation's liquid and gas pipeline stations during 1968. The liquid companies reflected nearly unanimous agreement of the use of electric motors as prime movers for pumping equipment, and the regulated gas companies believe that nearly 60% of the horsepower installed on gas pipelines would be other than gas-driven for 1968. Gas-turbine drivers (modified aircraft and industrial type) accounted for more than 450,000 hp to 326,000 hp of gas-engine-driven reciprocating compressors and 30,000 hp of electric-motor-driven equipment. Station construction/programs, factors that affect the selection of drivers, the current status of automation and the need for communications links are also discussed.
