SLURRY PUMPS: SOME DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

Centrifugal pumps may be used for short slurry pipelines involving low pressures, but for long pipelines, reciprocating pumps are favored. Piston pumps are suitable for pressures up to 2000 psi provided abrasiveness is not limiting; for abrasive conditions plunger type pumps are preferred. Other possible pumps include the surge-leg and diaphragm types. Valve design must limit velocity to avoid erosion, and sufficient metal-to-metal bearing area in the valve seat becomes critical. Elastomer seals in valves are satisfactory as long as the particles are friable rather than abrasive. Design of piston rod packing arrangements should seek to prevent entry of abrasive material into the packing.
