WHAT SLURRY PIPELINING IS ALL ABOUT

What slurry pipelining is all about is described in a series of questions answered by E.J. Wasp (Bechtel Corp.). Successful slurry pipelining operations moving materials such as coal, iron ore, limestone, and others have demonstrated that the pipeline can be the least costly means of transportation in many situations. Erosion of the pipe is minimal because velocities are low near the pipe wall; corrosion can be controlled by inhibitors. With adequate design to avoid abrasive flow, design life of say 50 yr can be expected for such hard materials as Tasmanian magnetite. The pumps used are similar to the mud pumps long used for drilling oil wells. The outlook for slurry pipelining is described as "excellent".
