FIRST SHORT-SEA BARGE CARRIER ENTERS SERVICE
A new type of barge carrying ship, with a single hull forward and a twin hull aft, loads barges on the weather deck by means of an elevator located between the ship's after hulls. This vessel, being much smaller than a conventional LASH ship, is excellent for use on inland waterways, and it can also accomodate three of the large LASH barges by locking them between the twin hulls. The cargo handling gear, including the elevator and the weatherdeck gear, the ballasting system, and the propulsion system are all described, and the loading unloading procedure is also briefly explained.
