ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION R & D APPLIED TO SHIPS AND WATERCRAFT
Continued public concern over environmental quality has led to new requirements for pollution free operation of ships and watercraft. New equipment and operating procedures are needed to meet these requirements. In particular, systems to prevent ship accidents and equipment to reduce pollutant discharges must be developed. This paper summarizes the legal requirements for shipboard pollution prevention and describes the current status of R & D to provide waste treatment devices for shipboard use. Vessel Traffic Systems, bilge/ballast water separators, sewage treatment device and ship exhaust emission R & D is emphasized.
