EFFECTS OF ARTIFICIAL SUNLIGHT UPON FLOATING OILS
Samples of hexadecane, of a low boiling fraction from a Tiajuana crude oil and of high boiling fractions from the Tiajuana, a Peruvion and a Libyan Amna crude oil have been floated on water and irradiated with u.v. light from a mercury arc. Under these conditions, the oils become photo-oxidized and changes occur in their spreading properties and their solubilities in the water. It is emphasized that photosensitizing agents might be used in practice to accelerate the oxidation of oils by sunlight in the event of their being spilled at sea.
