CRACK GROWTH MONITORING BY STRAIN SENSING
A simple method, based on the changes in strain pattern which are induced in a body by crack extension, is proposed for the measurement and sensing of crack growth. Experimental evidence is presented to demonstrate its ability to monitor the growth of cracks emanating at the surface of thick-walled cylinders and to detect crack instability during fracture toughness tests.
