MOTOR CYCLE CONSPICUITY: LITERATURE REVIEW
Accident studies have revealed that daytime conspicuity plays a major role in motorcycle accidents. The two conspicuity aids which showed the most promise after tests were the use of headlamps during the day, and fluorescent orange clothing. The use of headlamps on small motorcycles is problematic mainly because of the low electrical power generation, and fluorescent jackets (still new in South Africa) may not be readily acceptable to motorcyclists and durability problems may occur. In spite of this, it is recommended that riders of large motorcycles should be encouraged to use their headlamps at all times, and the riders of smaller motorcycles should be encouraged to wear fluorescent orange clothing.
