Installation of ground instrumentation (sensor arrays using geophones and accelerometers) for the monitoring of surface response: Deception Bay Road 2017/2018
In 2014, the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) acquired a Traffic Speed Deflectometer (TSD) manufactured by Greenwood Engineering. It was then upgraded by ARRB, making it the first integrated road surface and sub-surface condition assessment system in the world. This device is known as the iPAVE system. Since then, the TSD has been conducting annual network surveys in Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia and New Zealand. The main aim of this NACoE project is to acquire a better understanding of TSD deflection data by installing ground instrumentation and monitoring the ‘true’ surface response when heavy vehicle traffic or other deflection testing devices travel over the pavement. The objective is to provide a high-quality site to monitor the pass-by of an iPAVE vehicle and allow a detailed and comprehensive comparison with FWD data. This report provides details of the sensor selection and installation procedures used at the Deception Bay Roads (Queensland) site. The project scope also includes an investigate study of the iPAVE data application. A technical note has been prepared to inform TMR districts of possible applications and potential risks associated with the iPAVE data usage.
