MOTOR CYCLE CONSPICUITY AIDS: LIGHTS. AN INTERIM REPORT

The most popular method of increasing the daytime conspicuity of motorcycles is to drive with the headlights on. From overseas research and preliminary investigation in South Africa, it was found that certain problems are associated with this method. Most of the problems are limited to the smaller motorcycles. The purpose of this study was to establish whether the present use of their headlights significantly increases the conspicuity of motorcycles during the day. It was concluded that a large proportion of motorcycles do not benefit, or only benefit in certain circumstances. It is proposed that a "running light" be fitted to all motorcycles for which the distribution and the magnitude of the light beam are specified in this report. Further development of this light is needed. (TRRL)
