Back to the Future: Learning to Enhance Practices for Airfield Safety During Construction
This article focuses on runway safety during construction and how stakeholders can learn from past accidents in order to optimize airside operations. Examples of past accidents, such as the Singapore Airlines runway collision with construction equipment in Taipei in 2000, are utilized in order to illustrate lessons learned. Runway closures during construction can be mitigated by providing pilots with visual warnings of last resort, such as large signs and markings on runway pavements. Altering runway configurations are also suggested as means of managing risk. Also addressed are the issues of the establishment of national standards and collaboration.
