A STUDY OF THE MODIFICATIONS OF PEDESTRIAN BEHAVIOUR IN THE TOWN CENTRE OF GRONINGEN
ONDERZOEK NAAR VERANDERINGEN IN VOETGANGERS GEDRAG IN DE BINNENSTAD VAN GRONINGEN
In the town centre of Groningen a traffic management scheme was introduced in 1977 with the purpose of eliminating through traffic of private cars. By this means the town centre was expected to become a better environment for the visitors. Traffic counts clearly show that the number of pedestrians has increased in the area. The origin of the visitors did not change much, only the transport mode. Before, 66% of the visitors from the regions outside the city came by car. After the introduction, 50%. The walking distance from the parking places to the destination in the town centre has increased. Most visitors come for shopping in the town centre. The quality of the shops is important. (TRRL)
