THE POSSIBLE FUTURE ROLE FOR INTERMEDIATE CAPACITY GUIDED TRANSPORT SYSTEMS IN LONDON
The purpose of this report is to collate and summarise in one document all the London Transport studies of intermediate capacity guided systems completed and in hand, and to make recommendations for any future work. There are two basic categories of intermediate capacity systems: automated light(weight) rapid transit (alrt) and light rail transport (lrt). The first of these systems comprises the peoplemovers or horizontal elevators and the minitube; the second comprises light rail systems and dual mode steered/guided buses. The role and characteristics of each system is examined together with its possible applications in London. Mention is made of a working party set up in 1979 under the then group planning director to co-ordinate London Transport's work on all forms of intermediate capacity systems, and more specifically to examine the economic case for the introduction of alrt as a cheaper form of underground.
