A STUDY FOR ALTERNATIVE PTDC BUS GARAGE/FACILITY LOCATIONS IN THE NEWPORT NEWS-HAMPTON URBANIZED AREA
The existing facility of the Peninsula Transportation District Commission, an adaptation of original streetcar facilities, was analyzed in the context of effective and efficient operation. The inadequate buildings, fragmented operations and confused circulation for maintenance operations indicate the need for a new facility and careful analysis indicated that it should be on the existing site. A detailed space program for the new facility was prepared, based on the areas required for the operations predicted for 1992. A national computer model, as well as the specific operating requirements of Pentran were employed to determine an acceptable site area. After looking at existing and potential routes, along with potential areas of greatest ridership growth, a total of 16 sites were selected for evaluation. Despite the constraints of the shape of the existing site and need for phased replacement of its structures, it was recommended that this site be used. It was also recommended that a single satellite facility also be established in conjunction with Newport News public Works Department.
