THE REVENUE EFFECTS OF TIMTRONIC TICKET MACHINES
This paper describes an approach to measuring changes in the distribution of fares paid, caused by the introduction of automatic ticket machines on buses. The effect of the machines on service schedules was also studied. The proposed method is as follows: collect reliable daily revenues by route for as long a period as possible before the changeover; develop statistical relationships between the variations in revenue on one route and that on other similar routes; use those relationships to predict what revenues would have been expected on a given route, had the new machines not been installed; compare this predicted revenue with the actual revenue measured by the machine. An example is given of the type of regression model applicable in the required analyses.
