THE PROSPECTS FOR ADVANCED URBAN TRANSPORT
Automated transport covers a number of different types of system or service: autotaxi (or personal rapid transit) with a vehicle capacity in the range of 1 to 6 passengers and autotram (or group rapid transit, light guideway transit, intermediate capacity transit and, in the United Kingdom, minitram) with vehicles tending to hold from 10 to 60 passengers. This paper reviews the progress made in the last 2 years in the United Kingdom, the United States, the Federal Republic of Germany, France and Japan. An attempt is made to forecast the role automated transport might play in the UK to the end of the century.
