HOUSEHOLD TRAVEL PATTERNS AND EXPENDITURES: LINKS WITH SOCIETAL STRUCTURE

Links between absolute and relative measures of household expenditures for gasoline and structural characteristics of households are made evident. Data are collected by random-digit-dialed telephone interviews; the first wave during October, 1980 and the second wave during October 1981 (no. respondents on first wave = 1,082 and no. respondents on second wave = 800). Household's place in the social structure is indicated by stage of the life cycle, occupation of head of household, and dwelling type. Control variables include income, number of vehicles owned, number of workers who drive to work, the total of distances driven to work, and household size. Multivariate analyses show part of the relationship between household structure and both commuting and noncommuting expense is through the relationships with control variables, and part is independent of controls. Panel results show strong relationship between change in household structure and change in types of gasoline expense. Relationships observed for Florida in October 1980 are replicated in the study of household structure and gasoline expense for a sample of Rhode Island households interviewed during the Fall of 1980 (no. of respondents = 1,160). Percent of income expended for gasoline in the Florida and Rhode Island samples is compared. Detailed pattern of household vehicle ownership is shown for Florida.
