HOUSEHOLD TRAVEL PATTERNS AND EXPENDITURES: LINKS WITH SOCIETAL STRUCTURE-EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Relationships between structural composition of the household and household travel are identified. Household travel is indicated by total household expenditure for gasoline. Total household expenditure is divided into two categories: expenditure for journey to work and other expense, calculated as residual after subtracting commuting gasoline expense from total expenditure. Household structure is characterized by stage of household members in the life cycle--including presence or absence of children; occupation of head of household, and life style as indicated by type of dwelling unit. The research involves three different studies directed at the general problem of linking household travel to household structure.
