State of the Practice: Setting Speed Limits and Using Dynamic Speed Feedback Signs

Speeding, defined as exceeding the posted speed limit or driving too fast for road conditions, contributes to approximately one-third of all traffic fatalities and costs society about $40.4 billion each year. These guidelines focus on two strategies to reduce speeding: 1) Setting proper speed limits, which is key to ensuring reasonable and safe speeds; 2) Using dynamic speed feedback sign (DSFS) systems, traffic control devices that have been used successfully to reduce speeds. The guidelines include a summary of the current state of the practice and best practices for setting speed limits and a summary of best practices for using DSFS and recommendations on their use.
